Macedonian companies are preparing for the new e-Invoice (e-faktura) system introduced by the Public Revenue Office. Instead of invoices being exchanged only as paper documents or PDFs, the new system enables electronic creation, sending, receiving and processing of invoices.

If you own or manage a company, now is a good time to test the system and prepare the people who will work with invoices.

For Zemi.mk users, a Macedonian hosting provider and official registrar of .mk domains, we are also preparing an additional solution. Gendox will soon be available free of charge to Zemi.mk users, and its development is also taking into account the new e-Invoice infrastructure of the Public Revenue Office.

This guide explains, in simple terms, what a company needs to do to start testing e-Invoice.

What is e-Invoice?

e-Invoice is the new system of the Public Revenue Office for the electronic exchange of invoices.

It does not simply mean replacing a paper invoice with a PDF sent by email.

The invoice is created and processed as an electronic document within the system, while e-Invoice can cover the entire process: creating, sending, receiving, accepting, rejecting and cancelling an invoice.

The Public Revenue Office currently provides a test platform where companies can try the system before its full implementation.

What do you need to get started?

You do not need a special ERP system or an IT department simply to start testing.

You need:

  1. a person who will work with e-Invoice;
  2. access to the Public Revenue Office system;
  3. the appropriate e-Invoice permission;
  4. a valid qualified digital certificate;
  5. a computer from which the system will be used.

If you use an accountant, first decide who will actually work with e-Invoice: the company manager, an employee or the accountant.

STEP 1: Decide who will work with e-Invoice

First decide who will be responsible for invoices.

This could be:

  • the company manager;
  • an administrative employee;
  • someone from finance;
  • an in-house accountant;
  • an external accounting company.

It is not good practice for everyone in the company to use the same account.

Ideally, every person who needs to work with the system should have their own access and appropriate authorization.

STEP 2: Check whether the person has access to the Public Revenue Office electronic services

The person who will work with e-Invoice needs to be registered as a user of the electronic services of the Public Revenue Office.

If that person already uses the electronic services of the Public Revenue Office, this part may already be completed.

If they are not registered, they first need to create a user account.

For individuals, check whether their user profile allows them to receive authorizations from other users.

This is important when, for example, a company wants to authorize an employee or accountant to work on its behalf.

STEP 3: Open the registration and permissions page for e-Invoice

The Public Revenue Office provides a dedicated test page for registration and assigning e-Invoice permissions.

In the official documentation, look for the section:

“Registration and assigning privileges”

Open the page and sign in using the account that is authorized to manage permissions for the company.

STEP 4: Select your company

After signing in, select the legal entity for which you want to configure access.

If you are a manager or authorized person for several companies, carefully check that you have selected the correct company.

This is important because e-Invoice permissions are assigned for a specific taxpayer.

STEP 5: Add the person who will work with e-Invoice

The next step is to select or add the person who should receive access.

This can be an employee, accountant or another authorized person.

Enter the information requested by the system.

If the system cannot find the person, check:

  • whether the person has a user account;
  • whether the entered information is correct;
  • whether their profile allows them to receive authorizations.

Once the person is recognized by the system, continue with assigning the appropriate rights.

STEP 6: Assign the e-Invoice permission

The person needs to receive the appropriate permission to use the e-Invoice system.

Select the relevant permission and save the changes.

You have now defined which person is allowed to access e-Invoice on behalf of the company.

It is important to understand the difference between two things:

Authorization means that the person has the right to act on behalf of the company.

A digital certificate is used to verify the person’s identity and enable electronic signing.

This means there is still one important step after assigning the permission.

STEP 7: Prepare a qualified digital certificate

The person who will work with e-Invoice needs a valid qualified digital certificate.

If you already use a certificate for electronically signing documents or accessing other electronic services, check whether it is still valid.

Check:

  • whether the certificate is valid;
  • whether it is available on the computer;
  • whether the required components are installed;
  • whether the user can successfully sign electronic documents.

If the certificate has expired, renew it before continuing.

STEP 8: Open the e-Invoice test platform

Once the permission has been assigned, the authorized person should open the e-Invoice test platform.

The link to the test platform is published in the official documentation of the Public Revenue Office.

Sign in as the authorized person.

STEP 9: Register the digital certificate

When using the test system for the first time, you need to register the valid qualified digital certificate.

Follow the instructions displayed by the system.

If the system requires an additional browser component or extension, use only the components listed in the official Public Revenue Office documentation.

Do not install random “e-Invoice” browser extensions found online.

STEP 10: Create your first test e-Invoice

Once access and the certificate are configured, you can start testing.

It is best to begin with a simple invoice.

Prepare:

  • your company information;
  • customer information;
  • the name of the product or service;
  • quantity;
  • price;
  • tax rate;
  • date;
  • any other information required by the system.

Enter the information and create a test e-Invoice.

Before sending it, check all information once again.

STEP 11: Send the test invoice

When the invoice is ready, follow the process in the system for signing and sending it.

The goal at this stage is to learn the process.

Do not only test whether you can create a document. Test the entire process from beginning to end.

STEP 12: Check received invoices

e-Invoice is not only used for sending invoices.

Through the system, you will also be able to review invoices received by your company.

Check where the system displays:

  • received invoices;
  • sent invoices;
  • invoice status.

This will be an important part of everyday use.

STEP 13: Test accepting and rejecting invoices

When you receive a test invoice, check how the options for accepting or rejecting it work.

The Public Revenue Office test system allows these processes to be tested.

It is useful for the person who will eventually handle incoming invoices to try this process now.

STEP 14: Test cancelling an invoice

Mistakes happen when issuing invoices.

That is why you should also test what happens when an already-created invoice needs to be cancelled.

It is better to learn this in the test system than to do it for the first time when you urgently need to correct a real invoice.

Do not stop after one test invoice

Once you have successfully created your first invoice, test several situations that actually occur in your company.

For example:

  • a standard invoice;
  • an invoice with several line items;
  • different tax rates;
  • an invoice for a service;
  • an invoice for a product;
  • accepting a received invoice;
  • rejecting an invoice;
  • cancelling an invoice.

The goal is to understand the process before the system becomes part of your regular operations.

Check your company information now

Before you start using e-Invoice regularly, check whether your business information is correct.

In particular, check:

  • company name;
  • tax number;
  • address;
  • bank account;
  • customer information;
  • supplier information;
  • tax rates;
  • product and service names and prices.

This is even more important if you use accounting or ERP software.

Incorrect information that previously remained only on a PDF invoice can become a bigger problem once systems start exchanging structured information automatically.

What if you issue only a few invoices per month?

If you run a small company and issue only a small number of invoices, you probably do not need to think about complex integrations immediately.

The Public Revenue Office web application is designed to allow companies to use the system directly.

The most important things are to:

  1. set up the authorized person;
  2. assign the appropriate permission;
  3. register the certificate;
  4. learn the process.

What if you issue many invoices?

If your company issues dozens, hundreds or thousands of invoices, manually entering every invoice into a web application is not practical.

For such companies, the Public Revenue Office provides an e-Invoice API integration.

This means that your ERP, accounting or other business software can communicate directly with e-Invoice.

For example, you can create an invoice in the software you already use, while the data is sent electronically to the e-Invoice system.

In that case, contact your software provider and ask:

“Will our system be integrated with the Public Revenue Office e-Invoice system?”

If you develop your own software, use the technical documentation and API specifications published by the Public Revenue Office.

Gendox and e-Invoice

At Zemi.mk, we are already working on the next generation of Gendox, our business platform that will soon be available free of charge to Zemi.mk users.

The idea is to allow companies to manage customers, business information, financial processes, documents and invoicing in one place.

In the development of Gendox, we are following the official specifications and the development of the Public Revenue Office e-Invoice system.

The goal is simple: instead of entering the same information manually into several different systems, as much of the process as possible should be automated.

The final form of the integration will depend on the final specifications and rules of the e-Invoice system.

Free for Zemi.mk users

Zemi.mk is a Macedonian hosting provider and an official registrar of .mk domains, while Gendox is the next step in expanding the services we provide to Macedonian companies.

If you already use Zemi.mk for your .mk domain, website or Macedonian web hosting, Gendox will soon be available to you as an additional free tool.

From your domain and website to part of your company’s everyday business processes.

Quick checklist: what should you do today?

If we reduce everything above to the essentials, do the following:

1. Decide who will work with e-Invoice.

2. Check whether that person has access to the Public Revenue Office electronic services.

3. Open the Public Revenue Office page for registration and assigning permissions.

4. Select your company.

5. Add the person who will work with e-Invoice.

6. Assign the e-Invoice permission.

7. Check whether the person has a valid qualified digital certificate.

8. Open the e-Invoice test platform.

9. Register the certificate.

10. Create a test invoice.

11. Send it.

12. Check received and sent invoices.

13. Try accepting, rejecting and cancelling an invoice.

Once you have completed these steps, you will already have a good practical understanding of how e-Invoice works.

Where can you find the official instructions?

The Public Revenue Office provides dedicated official documentation for the e-Invoice project.

It includes user instructions, technical documentation, information about registration and permissions, as well as API integration instructions.

Because the system is still being developed and tested, always check the latest version of the official instructions before making changes to your systems.

The Public Revenue Office has also published a dedicated contact channel for questions and feedback related to e-Invoice testing.

Do not wait until the last moment

For most small companies, preparing for e-Invoice does not need to be complicated.

Most of the process comes down to correctly configuring users, permissions and the digital certificate, followed by some basic practical testing.

Do it while the system is still in the test phase.

You will know who has access, whether the certificate works, how an invoice is created and what the entire process looks like before it becomes part of your daily work.

And if you are a Zemi.mk user, follow our updates about Gendox. The platform will soon be available free of charge to Zemi.mk users, and we are developing it with the new e-Invoice infrastructure in North Macedonia in mind.

On 8 September 2026, Macedonia marks 35 years of independence. Three and a half decades in which the country built not only its institutions, economy and statehood, but also its own place in the digital world.

Today, when we open a website, make an online payment, use an electronic public service, work remotely or register a .mk domain, it is easy to forget how short this history actually is. Just over thirty years ago, the internet in Macedonia was a technology available to a small number of academic and research institutions. Today it is basic infrastructure for the economy, education, public administration and everyday life.

Macedonia’s digital story did not happen all at once. It was built step by step, from the first national academic network and the .mk domain, through broadband and mobile internet, to e-services, 5G and artificial intelligence.

And, remarkably, it began almost at the same time as independence itself.

1991. Independent Macedonia

On 8 September 1991, citizens voted for an independent and sovereign Macedonia.

At that moment, the internet was still far from the global mass network we know today. There was no Google, no Facebook, no smartphones, no streaming and no cloud services. The World Wide Web itself was only beginning to move beyond academic circles.

Yet the new state began building its digital identity almost immediately.

1992. The beginnings of Macedonia’s academic network

In September 1992, organised work began on the creation of a national academic and research network.

From those efforts MARnet would emerge, the Macedonian Academic and Research Network, which would play a central role in connecting Macedonian universities and scientific institutions with international computer networks.

This was the first real infrastructure foundation of the Macedonian internet.

1993. Macedonia receives .mk

On 23 September 1993, Macedonia received its national internet domain, .mk.

It remains one of the most important dates in the history of the Macedonian internet.

With the registration of .mk, Macedonia gained its own national namespace within the global Domain Name System. From that moment, the country had a permanent internet identifier of its own.

Today we see .mk used by thousands of companies, media organisations, institutions, shops and other projects. In 1993, its significance was even more fundamental. Macedonia had acquired its own permanent place in the architecture of the internet.

And this happened before the country even had full internet connectivity.

1995. Macedonia connects to the internet

On 15 June 1995, full internet connectivity to the global network was established through MARnet.

The same year also marked the beginning of the commercial internet market. The first internet providers appeared and internet access gradually moved beyond academic institutions into companies and homes.

This was the age of dial-up modems, telephone lines and connection speeds that now seem almost unimaginable.

But this is where the Macedonian web began.

The first local websites, portals, forums and online services started appearing. .mk began to fill with actual content.

The early 2000s. The internet becomes permanent

The next major change was broadband.

Dial-up gradually gave way to ADSL, cable internet and other forms of broadband access. The internet no longer had to be connected and disconnected through a telephone line. It began to remain permanently available.

The Electronic Communications Law of 2005 further opened the market and created the conditions for stronger competition between operators.

This was the period when the internet stopped being an interesting new technology and began becoming normal infrastructure.

Companies launched websites. Media moved online. More serious online stores started appearing. Email became standard business communication.

The Macedonian web entered a period of much faster growth.

2004 to 2006. Macedonia becomes a wireless internet pioneer

In the middle of the 2000s, Macedonia briefly gained an unusual place in global internet history.

Through the Macedonia Connects project, supported by USAID, a broad wireless broadband infrastructure was built and schools throughout the country were connected.

The network covered a very large part of the population, and Macedonia began to be internationally presented as the first country of its size to achieve nationwide wireless broadband coverage.

For a small and mountainous country, at a time when broadband itself was still not standard in many wealthier countries, this was a serious infrastructure achievement.

For a brief period, Macedonia was not simply following global digital development. It became an example of how wireless technology could rapidly provide broadband connectivity on a national scale.

2007. Computer for Every Child

The next major project tried to solve another problem.

Internet access has limited value if people do not have devices through which to use it.

The “Computer for Every Child” programme began the large-scale installation of computers and network equipment in primary and secondary schools.

The project would later face criticism. Some of the equipment became outdated quickly, and placing a computer on every desk did not automatically produce high-quality digital education.

Its historical effect, however, is difficult to dispute.

For an entire generation of students, the computer stopped being specialised equipment available only in an IT classroom. It became part of everyday school life.

Combined with broadband development and Macedonia Connects, this helped create a generation that grew up online.

2008 to 2013. The internet becomes mobile

The first 3G licences were awarded in Macedonia in 2008.

By the end of 2013, the LTE and 4G era had begun.

This may have been the biggest change in how ordinary people experienced the internet. Until then, the internet was largely a place you went to. From this point forward, it increasingly became something you carried with you.

Smartphones became mainstream. Social networks became major communication channels. Websites had to work properly on mobile devices. E-commerce, online banking and digital advertising began to grow much more seriously.

The internet was no longer a separate activity.

It became part of everyday life.

2014. Liberalisation of .mk and the arrival of .мкд

2014 was one of the most important years for Macedonian domains.

From 10 June, a new registration model entered into force, liberalising the .mk domain market and opening it to authorised private registrars.

MARnet remained the national registry, but users gained the ability to register domains through companies that could compete through better technology, support, automation and customer experience.

The same year, Macedonia also received its Cyrillic national domain, .мкд.

The selection process had started in 2012 through public proposals and voting, and in 2014 .мкд officially entered the global DNS.

For the first time, the Macedonian language and Cyrillic script gained their own presence at the highest level of the national domain system.

From that point onward, Macedonia had two national top-level domains, .mk and .мкд.

2015. Zemi.mk begins a new generation of .mk registration

On 15 April 2015, Zemi.mk became an official registrar of Macedonia’s national domains.

That date marks the beginning of our own story, but also forms part of a wider transformation of the Macedonian domain market.

The idea behind Zemi.mk was simple from the beginning. Registering a .mk domain should not feel like an administrative procedure. It should work like a modern online service.

Users search for a name, create an account, register the domain, manage DNS, activate hosting and receive technical support from one place.

In the years that followed, Zemi.mk continued to automate domain registration and management, introduce new tools and expand the hosting ecosystem around .mk.

This period also coincided with a much stronger commercial expansion of the national domain. .mk increasingly became the natural choice for Macedonian companies, media organisations, institutions, shops and new digital projects.

For us, a domain has never been simply another product in a shopping cart. It is the starting point of a digital identity.

2019. Public services begin moving online

In 2019, the National eServices Portal was launched together with the eID electronic identification system.

This represented an important change in the relationship between citizens and the state. A public service no longer had to begin with a physical counter, paper application and in-person visit.

Digital public administration did not happen overnight, and many procedures still remained partly analogue. Nevertheless, the direction had been set.

The state gradually began to function as a digital service as well.

The 2020 pandemic accelerated the process dramatically. Online meetings, remote work, e-commerce, digital payments and online education quickly became a normal part of daily life.

What had previously been a convenience suddenly became essential infrastructure.

2022. Macedonia enters the 5G era

In February 2022, Macedonia’s first commercial 5G network was launched.

Only 27 years after the establishment of the country’s first full internet connection to the outside world, Macedonia already had mobile infrastructure capable of speeds that would have seemed almost impossible in 1995.

That illustrates the speed of technological change better than almost anything else.

Dial-up opened the internet.

Broadband made it permanent.

Wireless networks expanded its reach.

3G and 4G made it mobile.

5G turns it into infrastructure not only for phones and computers, but also for devices, sensors, industrial systems and automation.

2025. The new rulebook makes .mk registration more complicated again

In 2025, the new MARnet Rulebook for the registration of .mk and .мкд domains entered into force.

And here the story takes a slightly unusual turn.

While the global domain industry continues moving toward greater automation and registrations completed within seconds, Macedonian domains once again gained additional formal administrative steps.

The new rules introduced stricter registrant identification, a mandatory registration request and additional documentation requirements for some users.

For customers, this meant more procedure than before.

But in 2025 there was one major difference compared with the old paper-based world. The required document no longer had to travel on paper.

Zemi.mk integrated electronic signing through Evrotrust, allowing users to identify themselves and sign the required registration request digitally.

The new rulebook did not make domain registration simpler. Our task was to use technology to make the additional procedure as painless as possible.

It is a good illustration of digitalisation itself. Sometimes technology removes bureaucracy. Sometimes regulation creates new bureaucracy. Then technology has to simplify it again.

2026. .mk enters the AI era

In 2026 we reach the latest stage.

Artificial intelligence is no longer simply a subject associated with the future. It is becoming a practical component of everyday digital services.

Zemi.mk has integrated AI into the domain search process.

Users no longer have to type a name and receive only a simple answer saying whether it is available or taken. AI can suggest alternative names and provide an additional expert perspective on the searched domain, including its length, readability, memorability, branding potential and suitability for a particular type of project.

The difference between 1995 and 2026 is difficult to describe more clearly.

In 1995, the main question was whether Macedonia could connect to the internet at all.

In 2005, the question was whether internet access could become fast and affordable enough for mass adoption.

In 2015, the question was whether a .mk domain could be registered as a simple and modern online service.

In 2026, the system can already help a user intelligently choose a better name before the domain is even registered.

All of this happened within a single generation.

35 years later

Macedonian digital independence does not have one single date.

It begins with independence in 1991, continues with the creation of the academic network in 1992, .mk in 1993 and full internet connectivity in 1995. Then came broadband, nationwide wireless coverage, “Computer for Every Child”, 3G, 4G, the liberalisation of .mk, the Cyrillic .мкд, a new generation of registrars, electronic public services, 5G and today’s AI era.

Some steps were better executed than others. Some were genuinely pioneering. Some created new headaches. Together, however, they created the digital Macedonia we know today.

A Macedonian company can now find a name, register a national domain through an official registrar, electronically sign the required documentation, activate hosting, DNS, SSL and business email, and become accessible to the entire world within a very short time.

A customer can open the site from a 5G phone. Google can index it. An AI system can read it and use it as a source.

Underneath all of that remains one of the earliest digital foundations established back in 1993.

.mk

Zemi.mk has been part of this story since 15 April 2015. For more than a decade, we have worked with Macedonia’s national domains, web hosting, DNS, electronic signatures and, today, AI tools that make domain selection and management smarter and easier.

On 8 September, we celebrate 35 years of independent Macedonia.

And 35 years during which, alongside the country itself, its digital space continued to grow.

From the first internet connection to 5G.

From the first .mk domains to AI.

From a handful of academic computers to a country in which almost every person, company and institution is part of the network.

The next 35 years will probably not be about whether Macedonia is online.

That question was answered a long time ago.

The question is what we will build there.

Happy 8 September. Happy 35 years of independence, Macedonia.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence is once again changing how people access information on the internet. This is a significant shift, but not the first one of its kind. In the early web, users moved directly between websites and portals. Search engines later became the dominant intermediary between users and the web. Today, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and other generative systems are adding another layer: instead of merely locating documents, they are increasingly trying to assemble answers from them.

From the perspective of a website owner, this can easily lead to the mistaken conclusion that domains and traditional SEO are gradually losing value. The technical reality, at least for now, suggests something else. Google has explicitly stated that its generative Search experiences are built on top of its core Search ranking and quality systems, using methods such as retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out to identify relevant pages from the Search index. For a page to be considered at all for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode, it still needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search.

In other words, AI is not eliminating the web as a source. It is changing the interface through which users access it.

From ranking to retrieval and citation

Traditional SEO has largely been concerned with where a page ranks in search results. In generative search, an additional dimension emerges: whether a system is able to identify a page as a relevant source and whether it is likely to use or cite that page when constructing an answer.

In practice, this expands the meaning of visibility. The question is no longer only, “What position do we hold for a given keyword?” It increasingly becomes, “Is our page among the sources that a search system considers sufficiently relevant and reliable to build an answer from?”

This does not mean that SEO suddenly becomes an entirely different discipline. On the contrary, Google has been quite clear on this point: optimisation for generative search still rests on the same foundational principles. There is no special AI markup that automatically delivers visibility, and neither llms.txt, “AI keywords” nor mechanically rewriting content for LLMs represents a shortcut into AI search results. The fundamentals remain crawlability, indexing, sound technical structure, useful original content and clearly defined information.

That brings the conversation back to the domain.

What exactly does a .MK domain signal?

.mk is not an SEO trick, and it should not be treated as one.

It is a country-code top-level domain — a ccTLD — meaning the national domain associated with the Republic of North Macedonia.

From Google’s perspective, ccTLDs serve a very specific purpose. National domain extensions are a strong signal that a website is intended for a particular country.

That is the technically defensible reason why .mk has SEO value for a business whose primary market is Macedonia.

Not because Google will automatically rank a .mk website above a .com website. There is no such rule. A weak, slow or poorly structured .mk site will not outperform a high-quality .com site simply because of the extension.

The value lies in context.

When a search engine needs to determine whether a page is relevant to a user and a market in North Macedonia, .mk removes an important layer of ambiguity. Together with the language of the site, local business information, Google Business Profile signals, links, content, structured data and other supporting signals, the national domain helps define the market a website is meant to serve.

That is precisely why at Zemi.mk, as a specialised platform for the registration and management of .mk domains, we do not treat a domain merely as a technical address. The choice of name, extension, length, readability, memorability and local relevance all form part of a broader digital strategy.

AI is already being used in domain selection

AI should not be seen only as something that will search the web in the future. It is already useful much earlier — at the stage where a digital identity is being created.

Zemi.mk uses AI in the domain search process, not only to show users whether a particular domain is available, but also to provide expert context around that choice. When a user searches for a domain, the AI analysis can indicate what type of project the name is suitable for, what its strengths are, where it may create friction and which factors should be considered from the perspective of branding, recognisability, pronunciation, length or online use.

That is an important distinction. Domain registration has traditionally been a binary process: the name is available or it is not. But the fact that a domain is available does not mean it is necessarily a good choice.

A short domain may be excellent for branding, yet too abstract for a project that depends heavily on direct search intent. An exact-match domain may clearly describe a service, yet become limiting if the business later expands beyond that niche. A name that looks attractive in writing may create difficulties when spoken over the phone or when users are expected to remember it. Another domain may be highly suitable for the Macedonian market, but a poor fit for a brand that plans to expand internationally.

The AI analysis on Zemi.mk is designed to provide precisely that layer of context. Not to make the decision instead of the user, but to offer an additional expert perspective before registration.

This is also a good example of the broader shift AI is bringing to the domain industry. The value is no longer limited to checking a namespace and completing a registration. Increasingly, value lies in the context around the choice: what that name means for the brand that will be built on it, and how it is likely to function in search, marketing and AI environments.

Does .MK provide an advantage in ChatGPT and other AI systems?

Here it is important to distinguish between what is known and what would merely be marketing speculation.

There is no basis for claiming that ChatGPT, Gemini or another large language model follows a general rule that favours .mk simply because a site uses a Macedonian ccTLD. Nor would it be correct to promise that registering a national domain will by itself result in citations inside AI-generated answers.

However, for AI systems connected to search, the domain exists within the same web ecosystem from which retrieval takes place. Google directly confirms that its generative Search features rely on the Search index and on its core ranking systems.

A much more grounded conclusion follows from that: signals that help a search engine correctly understand the geography, subject matter, entity and relevance of a website do not suddenly stop mattering simply because the final output is an AI-generated answer rather than a traditional list of links.

For a Macedonian business, .mk is therefore a rational part of a long-term search strategy, not an “AI hack”.

In the AI web, the original source matters more, not less

There is another shift that may be even more important than the change in search interface itself.

Generative AI has dramatically reduced the cost of producing content. It is now trivial to generate hundreds of texts, landing pages, product descriptions, images or even entire websites. As a result, the mere existence of content becomes a weaker differentiator.

In an environment where synthetic content is effectively unlimited, value shifts toward original sources, expertise and the clear identity behind information.

For businesses, this has a direct consequence. The official web domain becomes the place where the most accurate and complete version of the brand’s information should live: services, products, specifications, pricing, documentation, contact details, terms, locations, authorship and expert content.

That is not something a social media profile can fully replace.

On its own domain, a company controls information architecture, URL structure, internal linking, redirects, canonical rules, structured data, sitemaps, robots directives, server responses and the long-term continuity of its content. All of these are part of the infrastructure through which search systems discover, process and understand a website.

That is also why Zemi.mk publishes its own analysis and expert content on .mk domains, DNS, registration and domain usage, instead of treating a domain merely as a product to be added to a cart. In the new search environment, clear topical positioning matters both to people and to the systems that organise and retrieve information from the web.

The value of a domain in the AI era may therefore lie less in whether a person manually types the address into a browser, and more in the fact that the domain represents a stable, controlled and canonical point of presence for a brand on the open web.

.MK is not a substitute for SEO. It is part of a solid SEO foundation.

For a business operating primarily in the Macedonian market, choosing .mk has a rational technical basis. It immediately places the web project in a local geographic context and creates an owned address on which long-term organic authority can be built.

But the domain is only the starting point.

A good .mk domain without a good website is not an SEO strategy. To create real value, it needs to be backed by fast and reliable hosting, HTTPS, correct indexing, clean information architecture, proper canonical and redirect handling, locally relevant content and information that genuinely deserves to be discovered.

AI does not change this principle. It simply expands the number of surfaces on which the result of that work may appear.

In traditional search, that result appeared as a search listing. In generative search, it may also appear as a source inside an AI answer. In the next phase, an increasing part of the web is likely to be used by automated agents that search, compare and process information on behalf of users.

The technology built above DNS and the web continues to evolve. The search layer changed radically once with Google, and it is changing again now with generative AI. But the need for a brand to maintain its own stable, controlled and machine-accessible address on the internet has not disappeared.

For Macedonian businesses, .mk remains the most direct way for that address to also carry clear local relevance.

And for Zemi.mk, AI is not an argument that domains are becoming unnecessary. It is a technology we are already using to help users make better domain decisions and better understand the strategic role of a domain itself.

AI does not make the .MK domain obsolete. It changes how its value is created, recognised and used.

The .mk domain is the national internet domain of Macedonia and the best choice for companies, brands, organizations, media outlets, and websites targeting a Macedonian audience. If you want to register a .mk domain, it is important to understand the exact technical rules: domain length, allowed characters, when a 1-character domain is possible, and why .mk is usually a better option for Macedonian websites than many other domain extensions.

According to the MARnet rulebook, a .mk domain name must normally contain at least 2 and at most 63 characters. An exception exists only when a .mk domain contains 1 character, and that is allowed only in the case of a protected trademark, protected mark, name, or brand.

What are the rules for a .mk domain?

The rules for the .mk domain are clearly defined in the rulebook on the organization and management of the top national internet domains. This means that the .mk domain is not just a commercial web address, but part of an officially regulated national internet system.

A .mk domain name:

  • consists of letters from the English alphabet,
  • may contain numbers from 0 to 9,
  • may contain a hyphen (-),
  • does not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters,
  • must contain at least 2 and at most 63 characters,
  • may not begin with a hyphen,
  • may not end with a hyphen,
  • may not contain two consecutive hyphens.

What is the minimum length of a .mk domain?

The minimum length of a .mk domain is 2 characters. This is the standard rule that applies to normal .mk domain registration. That means a one-character .mk domain is not allowed as an ordinary registration.

When is a 1-character .mk domain allowed?

A 1-character .mk domain is allowed only as an exception, and only in the case of a protected trademark, protected mark, name, or brand.

In other words:

  • for normal registration, the rule is minimum 2 characters,
  • if there is a valid basis such as a protected trademark, mark, name, or brand, then the 1-character exception may apply.

This is why precision matters: it is not generally true that a .mk domain may have 1 character. That is only possible in a strictly defined exception.

Which characters are allowed in a .mk domain?

According to the rulebook, a .mk domain name:

  • consists of letters from the English alphabet,
  • may contain digits from 0 to 9,
  • may contain the hyphen (-) sign,
  • is case-insensitive.

What is not allowed?

Several clear restrictions also apply to .mk domains:

  • the first character cannot be a hyphen,
  • the last character cannot be a hyphen,
  • two consecutive hyphens are not allowed.

How many .mk domains can one registrant register?

According to the rulebook, the number of .mk domains one registrant may register is unlimited. {index=8}

For how long can a .mk domain be registered?

.mk domains can be registered for a period of 1 to 10 years, with the right to renew them. If a domain is not renewed on time, it enters a protected period and may later be deleted from the Register and become available again.

Why is .mk the best choice for Macedonian websites?

1. Local relevance

The .mk domain immediately shows that the website is intended for Macedonia. For a local market, this is a strong signal to both users and search engines.

2. Greater trust among Macedonian users

Macedonian users are much more likely to recognize a .mk domain as local, relevant, and trustworthy. A domain like yourcompany.mk feels much more natural for a local business.

3. Better brand identity

The .mk domain is short, clear, and easy to remember. It is the natural choice for companies, online stores, media outlets, organizations, local services, and personal brands working in Macedonia.

4. Better business email

With a .mk domain, you can use professional addresses such as info@yourcompany.mk or contact@brand.mk, which creates a much stronger professional impression.

5. Better local SEO relevance

If your target audience is in Macedonia, the .mk domain is a strong local signal. It is not the only SEO factor, but it is an important part of local visibility when combined with strong content, fast hosting, and technical optimization.

.mk or .com for Macedonia?

If you are building a site for a global brand, .com may make sense. But if you are building a website for a Macedonian business, Macedonian audience, or local brand, then in most cases .mk is the better choice.

What does this mean for registration through Zemi.mk?

When you register a .mk domain through Zemi.mk, you do so through an authorized registrar, with a process adapted to the applicable rules, with a clear user panel, electronic procedures, and support in Macedonian.

Zemi.mk has been a licensed .mk and .мкд domain registrar by MARnet, through the legal entity Vortechs Media DOO, Valandovo, since April, 2015. More than a decade later, Zemi.mk has become one of the most recognizable Macedonian platforms for .mk domain registration, domain management, and web hosting.

From a small local domain and hosting platform, Zemi.mk has grown into one of the most important players in the .mk internet space. According to Zemi.mk internal operational data, the platform has registered more than 8,000 .mk domains, currently registers the highest number of new .mk domains in the world, and is considered the fastest-growing .mk domain registrar.

Zemi.mk’s growth is especially significant when viewed over time: from 16th place in 2016 to third place in 2025 among .mk domain registrars, by the number of active .mk domains. This progress is not accidental. It is the result of a simple registration process, transparent pricing, technical automation, electronic signing of domain requests, local support, and long-term commitment to the development of the Macedonian internet space.

What does it mean to be a licensed .mk domain registrar?

A licensed .mk domain registrar is a legal entity authorized to register and manage .mk and .мкд domains in accordance with the rules and procedures defined by MARnet.

This means that the registrar is not merely an intermediary for buying a domain name, but an official participant in the national domain system. The registrar processes registration requests, manages domain data, enables nameserver changes, contact updates, DNS settings, renewals, transfers, and other domain-related operations.

Zemi.mk, through Vortechs Media, is listed on MARnet’s official registrar list as a registrar for both .mk and .мкд domains.

What is MARnet?

MARnet, the Macedonian Academic Research Network, is a public institution performing an activity of public interest. MARnet was established by the Law on Establishing the Macedonian Academic Research Network, adopted and published on September 20, 2010 in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 124.

This law regulates MARnet’s establishment, status, tasks, operations, governance, management, financing, supervision, and other issues related to its work.

MARnet is the institution responsible for the organization and management of the Macedonian top-level domain .mk and the Macedonian Cyrillic top-level domain .мкд. The rulebook for the organization and management of .mk and .мкд domains regulates the structure, use, registration, deletion, rights and obligations of users, and other matters related to the national domain space.

Zemi.mk and the development of the .mk internet space

Since April, 2015, Zemi.mk has actively participated in the development of the .mk domain ecosystem. At a time when domain registration was often viewed as an administrative procedure, Zemi.mk focused its development on automation, simplicity, and a digital user experience.

The goal was clear: registering and managing .mk domains should become fast, understandable, and accessible to every user — from individuals and small businesses to web agencies, online stores, media outlets, and larger companies.

Over more than 10 years of operation, Zemi.mk has built a system that allows users to search for domains, register .mk domains, manage DNS records, change nameservers, renew domains, connect hosting services, and use business email through one centralized platform.

From 16th place in 2016 to third place in 2025

One of the strongest indicators of Zemi.mk’s growth is its position among .mk registrars. According to Zemi.mk internal data, and MARnet’s official statements, the platform was ranked 16th in 2016, while by 2025 it had reached third place among .mk registrars. This growth is especially significant because Zemi.mk became licensed after the initial re-registration and distribution of the existing .mk domain base from MARnet to private registrars, meaning it did not inherit any of the approximately 30,000 already registered .mk domains at the time. Its portfolio was built from zero, through new registrations, transfers, and long-term user trust.

This growth reflects the trust users place in Zemi.mk, but also the change in how Macedonian users approach domain registration. Today, users are not looking only for a registrar; they are looking for a digital partner that can provide a domain, hosting, email, SSL, DNS management, WordPress support, and fast technical assistance.

This is exactly where Zemi.mk builds its advantage: as a local platform that understands the Macedonian market while operating according to modern technical standards.

More than 8,000 registered .mk domains

After more than 10 years as a licensed .mk registrar, Zemi.mk has registered more than 8,000 .mk domains. This number shows not only the size of the platform, but also its continuing role in expanding Macedonia’s online presence.

Every registered .mk domain is part of the broader digital infrastructure of Macedonia: business websites, online stores, institutional websites, personal projects, media outlets, organizations, associations, and startups.

With every new domain, the visibility of the Macedonian internet space grows, and the local digital identity becomes stronger.

The highest number of new .mk domains and the fastest-growing .mk registrar

In 2025 and 2026, Zemi.mk has positioned itself as the registrar registering the highest number of new .mk domains in the world. Since .mk is the national domain of Macedonia, every new registration, regardless of where the user comes from, is part of the global .mk domain space.

This means that Zemi.mk is not only a local service, but one of the most important operational actors in the world of .mk domains. Its growth shows that users are looking for a simple, digital, and reliable way to register a Macedonian domain.

The combination of fast registration, free electronic identification and signing of the request, transparent pricing, and stable customer support makes Zemi.mk the fastest-growing .mk registrar.

Electronic signing and a modern registration process

One of Zemi.mk’s key advantages is that the .mk domain registration process is digitized and simplified. Instead of printing, manually signing, scanning, and sending documents, users can electronically sign the domain registration request.

This is especially important because .mk domain registration is a formal process regulated by MARnet rules. Through electronic signing, Zemi.mk enables users to complete the procedure faster, more securely, and without unnecessary administration.

For companies, web agencies, and users who frequently register domains, this is a major practical advantage.

Why do users choose Zemi.mk?

  • Licensed .mk and .мкд registrar by MARnet
  • More than 10 years of experience in the .mk domain space
  • More than 8,000 registered .mk domains
  • Fastest-growing .mk registrar
  • From 16th place in 2016 to third place in 2025
  • Fast and simple registration process
  • Electronic signing of domain requests
  • Modern user profile for domain management
  • DNS management and nameserver changes
  • Web hosting, email, and SSL services from the same platform

You need a complete, simple, and secure experience: fast registration, transparent pricing, electronic signing, easy domain management, DNS control, support, and the ability to connect your domain with hosting, email, or a website.

Zemi.mk is one of the leading choices for registering and managing .mk domains in Macedonia. As a licensed MARnet registrar through Vortechs Media, Zemi.mk is a platform specialized in .mk domains, built for Macedonian users, companies, organizations, web designers, startups, and anyone who wants a professional online presence with a local domain.

Why is Zemi.mk the best choice for a .mk domain?

The biggest advantage of Zemi.mk is that the entire process is designed to be simple, fast, and fully adapted to the Macedonian domain space. Instead of complicated procedures, manual paperwork, and unnecessary delays, Zemi.mk offers a modern process for .mk domain registration with electronic signing and online management.

This means users can search for a domain, create a profile, place an order, electronically sign the request, and continue managing the domain through one clear system.

.mk domain registration price at Zemi.mk

One of the reasons why Zemi.mk is an excellent choice is its transparent pricing. A one-year .mk domain registration costs 799 denars, while .mk domain renewal costs 649 denars.

This is a clear and simple price, without hidden costs or unnecessary complexity. In addition, according to the Zemi.mk tariff, the registration price includes one electronic signing of the request through the Zemi.mk system, making the process even simpler and more practical for users.

Free electronic signing of the request

One of the most important advantages of Zemi.mk is the option for electronic signing of the domain registration request. This matters because registering a .mk domain is not only the purchase of a name, but a formal registration process in accordance with the rules of the national domain system.

With electronic signing, users do not need to print documents, sign them manually, scan them, or submit them physically. The process is faster, cleaner, safer, and better suited for modern business.

For companies, web agencies, and users who frequently register domains, this is a major advantage. Instead of an administrative procedure, registration becomes a simple digital process.

How does the .mk domain registration process work through Zemi.mk?

The process is simple and can be completed in several steps:

  1. Domain search — enter the desired name and check whether the .mk domain is available.
  2. Create or log in to your profile — the user logs in or creates a new Zemi.mk account.
  3. Place the domain order — select the domain and continue the process.
  4. Electronic signing — the registration request is electronically signed through the system.
  5. Payment and activation — after completing the required steps, the domain is activated and becomes available for management.

This process is a major advantage for anyone who wants to quickly start a website, email, online store, or new digital project.

Simple .mk domain management

Registration is only the first step. The true value of a good domain registrar is visible after registration — in how easily you can manage your domain.

Through Zemi.mk, users can manage domains through their user profile, change nameservers, work with DNS records, renew domains, connect hosting services, and monitor important domain information.

This is especially important for web designers, agencies, and companies managing multiple domains. Instead of each domain becoming an administrative burden, Zemi.mk makes domain management clear and practical.

Zemi.mk as a local domain and hosting partner

A good .mk domain registrar should understand that a domain rarely exists on its own. Most often, it is connected to a website, business email, WordPress installation, cloud infrastructure, SSL certificate, DNS records, and technical support.

Zemi.mk is a strong choice because it is not only a domain registrar, but also a web hosting and online services platform. This allows the domain, hosting, email, and SSL certificate to be managed from one place.

For users, this means fewer complications, faster problem resolution, and clearer responsibility. Instead of having the domain with one provider, hosting with another, and DNS somewhere else, Zemi.mk enables complete management through one local platform.

Free .mk domain with hosting package

In addition to standalone .mk domain registration, Zemi.mk also offers free .mk domain registration with selected hosting packages. This is an excellent option for new businesses, blogs, websites, and online stores that want to start immediately with a complete solution.

With this approach, the user is not only buying a domain, but receiving the foundation for a complete online presence: a .mk domain, web hosting, SSL certificate, business email options, and technical support.

Why is the .mk domain important for Macedonian businesses?

The .mk domain is the strongest local internet signal for Macedonia. If your audience is in Macedonia, if you sell products or services on the Macedonian market, or if you want your brand to look locally relevant and trustworthy, the .mk domain is the most natural choice.

A domain such as yourcompany.mk looks professional, is easy to remember, and immediately shows that the brand is connected to Macedonia. In addition, when the .mk domain is used for business email, such as contact@yourcompany.mk, it creates a much more serious and credible impression.

It immediately shows that the website is connected to North Macedonia, the local market, and users who expect a trustworthy local online address.

What is a .mk domain?

.mk is the internet domain extension for North Macedonia. It works as part of the global DNS system, just like .com, .net, or .org, but with a clear national identity.

In practice, a .mk domain can look like this:

  • company.mk
  • store.mk
  • brand.mk
  • name.mk

In addition to direct .mk domains, the Macedonian domain space also includes extensions such as .com.mk, .org.mk, .net.mk, .inf.mk, .edu.mk, and the national Cyrillic domain .мкд. Some of these domain types are subject to specific rules under MARnet’s domain registration framework.

Who manages .mk domains?

The .mk and .мкд domains are managed by MARnet, the Macedonian Academic Research Network. MARnet is responsible for the organization and management of North Macedonia’s national internet domains.

.mk domains are registered through authorized registrars. MARnet publishes a list of registrars authorized to register and manage .mk and .мкд domains.

Why choose a .mk domain?

1. Local trust

When users in North Macedonia see a .mk domain, they immediately recognize it as a local web address. This is important for companies selling products or services on the Macedonian market, as well as for institutions, media outlets, associations, and personal brands.

2. Better recognition among Macedonian users

The .mk domain is short, clear, and easy to remember. For local users, an address such as name.mk often feels more natural and trustworthy than a longer international alternative.

3. A strong local SEO signal

For websites targeting Macedonian users, a .mk domain can help build local relevance. The domain alone does not guarantee high rankings, but it is part of a broader SEO strategy that includes quality hosting, fast website performance, strong content, technical optimization, and relevant local signals.

4. A professional appearance

A domain such as yourcompany.mk looks professional, especially when used for business email, for example contact@yourcompany.mk. This creates a stronger impression than using free email services for official communication.

5. Support for the Macedonian internet ecosystem

By registering a .mk domain, you become part of the local internet ecosystem. This matters for the development of the local digital economy, Macedonian businesses, media, organizations, and web professionals.

Who can register a .mk domain?

.mk domains are used by companies, individuals, organizations, media outlets, startups, institutions, online stores, and personal brands. Depending on the type of domain, different rules may apply, especially for certain second-level domains such as .org.mk, .edu.mk, or .com.mk.

For most commercial and personal use cases, a direct .mk domain is the simplest and most recognizable solution.

.mk, .com.mk, or .мкд — which one should you choose?

.mk is the shortest and most recognizable option. It is the best choice for most modern brands, companies, and web projects.

.com.mk can be a good option for commercial entities that prefer a longer but traditionally recognizable domain structure.

.org.mk is commonly associated with organizations, associations, and nonprofit entities, in accordance with the registration rules.

.мкд is the national Cyrillic domain, useful for brands that want a fully Cyrillic internet address and communication with audiences that prefer the Macedonian script. IANA lists .мкд as an IDN ccTLD connected to North Macedonia.

How to choose a good .mk domain

A good .mk domain should be short, clear, easy to remember, and connected to your brand, service, or field of work.

  • Choose a name that is easy to pronounce and type.
  • Avoid unnecessarily long words.
  • Do not use too many hyphens or numbers.
  • Check whether the name also works well on social media.
  • Consider whether the domain will look good as a business email address.

For example, if you have a local brand, it is better to choose a clear name such as mybrand.mk instead of a complicated combination that users will struggle to remember.

How is a .mk domain registered?

A .mk domain is usually registered through an authorized registrar. The process typically includes:

  1. Searching whether the desired domain is available.
  2. Selecting the domain and registration period.
  3. Entering registrant details.
  4. Completing payment and registration confirmation.
  5. Setting DNS records, nameservers, or hosting.

In recent years, privacy protection for domain data has become increasingly important. For .mk domains, certain sensitive details in WHOIS output are protected or reduced in order to limit abuse and automated data collection. MARnet’s public WHOIS system displays reduced information such as DATA REDACTED for certain fields.

Is a .mk domain good for SEO?

Yes, a .mk domain is a good SEO choice when your target audience is in North Macedonia. It creates a clear local association and can help both Google and users better understand the geographic relevance of the website.

However, the domain is only one part of SEO. Good results also require:

  • fast and stable hosting,
  • a technically healthy website,
  • optimized titles and meta descriptions,
  • quality content,
  • a good URL structure,
  • local signals and relevant links,
  • regular maintenance and security.

That is why the combination of a .mk domain, quality hosting, and strong content is a powerful foundation for local online presence.
